In May 2024, Apoyo Consultaría completed an annual study to identify and estimate the impact (direct and indirect) of Cerro Verde’s activities on the local region of Arequipa and national economy of Peru for 2023. The study concluded that Cerro Verde has had significant impact on both the regional and national economies in terms of employment, tax revenue, domestic purchasing and additional voluntary social investment.
Cerro Verde generated, directly and indirectly, a total of 118 thousand jobs in various sectors during 2023. The study estimated that for every person Cerro Verde employs 10.5 indirect jobs are generated in the economy across sectors, including machinery/vehicles, administrative and business support services, utilities and others. The site also spent approximately $450 million on goods and services in Arequipa. Amounts spent in Arequipa and in other areas of Peru mainly relate to machinery and vehicles, administrative support services, and utilities.
Additionally, Cerro Verde voluntarily contributed $9.7 million to the Arequipa community, investing in road and sanitation projects, water infrastructure, education and health programs and capacity building initiatives. Cumulatively from 2005 to 2023, Cerro Verde has invested $256 million in social development programs in the region. In 2023, Cerro Verde’s operations and activities accounted for 2.5% of Peru’s national gross domestic product and 46% of Arequipa’s gross domestic product.
INDONESIA
PT Freeport Indonesia (PT-FI) is one of the largest taxpayers in Indonesia. Since PT-FI’s current contract with the Indonesia government began in 1992, direct benefits to Indonesia have totaled approximately $29.3 billion.
In 2023, PT-FI’s direct benefits to Indonesia (taxes, royalties, export duties and fees paid to the Indonesia government) totaled $2.7 billion, including $608 million to local governments which is comprised of the Papua Provincial Government, Central Papua Provincial Government, Mimika Regency Government and other Regencies in Papua and Central Papua Provinces.
